The US is clearly facing a major challenge in its relations with Iran on the eve of the midterm elections. In recent days, multiple reports from the White House indicate that the Trump administration is pursuing two simultaneous paths regarding Tehran: exploring military options and attempting to open diplomatic channels.
Presence of Military Commanders at the White House
The Wall Street Journal and Axios news website have reported that in a meeting at the White House, Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), discussed military options against Iran with Donald Trump. In this meeting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and General Dan Keen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were also present. The discussions focused on continuing the maritime blockade of Iran and preparing for extensive military operations.
Military and Diplomatic Preparations
While the Pentagon has strengthened its defensive positions in the Middle East and completed its arms reserves in recent weeks, the Trump administration is also examining diplomatic communications with Iran. In this context, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, has been highlighted as a key figure who could play a crucial role in negotiations.
JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, proposed a personal meeting with Mohsen Rezaei in a letter to discuss reaching an agreement to end tensions. American officials believe that Rezaei's connections with Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, could serve as an advantage in the negotiation process.
However, there is still no evidence of a change in the Islamic Republic's stance on nuclear issues. The Washington Post noted how a figure like Mohsen Rezaei, who has been part of the military and security structure of the Islamic Republic for years, could become one of the main factors in reaching an agreement between Tehran and Washington.
Consequences and Future of Relations Between the Two Countries
This dual approach of the Trump administration towards Iran could significantly impact the fate of relations between the two countries. While military and economic pressures on Iran continue, the effort to negotiate and open the doors to diplomacy reflects the complexities present in these relations. Especially since the final decision regarding military or diplomatic action will be made after the midterm congressional elections on November 3 (Aban 12).
These developments come at a time when the leak of sensitive information by a Pentagon official has significantly raised concerns about information security at the US Department of Defense. It seems that the Trump administration is trying to adopt comprehensive approaches, while applying pressure on Iran, to also create opportunities for dialogue.
