Nidal Hasan, Major and psychiatrist of the U.S. Army, has been sentenced to death by firing squad for the deadly shooting in 2009 at Fort Hood military base. This ruling, which has been approved by U.S. President Donald Trump, will be the first execution carried out by the U.S. Army in over 60 years.

Details of the Fort Hood shooting

On November 5, 2009, Nidal Hasan opened fire on colleagues and individuals present at the soldier deployment preparation center in Fort Hood. In this incident, 13 people lost their lives and 32 others were injured. Hasan, who was severely wounded in the shooting, was arrested and put on trial following the incident.

In 2013, Hasan was found guilty of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to death. He is currently being held at a military detention center in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. With this ruling, Hasan becomes one of four inmates sentenced to death in the military justice system.

Execution procedures

According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has recommended the execution of Nidal Hasan, and this recommendation has been approved by Trump. Currently, the time and place of the execution are still unspecified, but according to military regulations, the execution must be carried out within 150 days of the President's approval and cannot take place sooner than 60 days after this approval.

This decision comes at a time when ABC News reported in June that the military was planning to carry out executions of death row inmates. This has been confirmed based on internal documents and statements from relevant officials and indicates a shift in the military's approach to severe punishments in recent times.

With this decision, Nidal Hasan is recognized as a symbol of military crimes and ethical challenges in the U.S. This death sentence will not only impact Hasan's fate but also the future of the military justice system and how similar crimes are addressed.
