New York, London, and Paris are at the top of the list of the best cities in the world in 2026. This ranking is based on the Global Cities Index by Oxford Economics and is conducted based on five criteria: governance, economy, human capital, environment, and quality of life.

Top Features of Cities

Cities leading in this index typically score high in human capital as well. This criterion refers to skills, education, and population diversity. The presence of talents and innovative ideas can help revitalize neighborhoods and various cultures. For example, Boston, which ranks seventh on this list, has one of the highest incomes due to its prominent universities and colleges. This wealth is also allocated to public spaces such as the Rose Kennedy Greenway and Harvard Art Museums.

Cultural Attractions and Quality of Life

Dublin, ranked sixth, boasts a skilled workforce and institutions like Trinity College Dublin. These features have attracted major global companies to the city and contributed to the revitalization of public spaces. London, by attracting talent from around the world, has secured the top rank in human capital, and this cultural diversity enhances the city's food scene.

Paris, which ranks third, is known for its high quality of life. The city has 130 museums, many of which offer free entry to permanent collections. Seattle has also secured fourth place due to its rich artistic facilities and musical history.

Alongside these features, environmental factors are also important. London performs well in this regard with its effective policies in reducing traffic and pollution. Additionally, San Francisco has a lower dependence on cars due to its advanced transportation network.

Technology is also a driving force for some successful cities. San Jose has the highest GDP per capita due to the establishment of major tech companies. Similarly, Tallinn has made the list of notable cities due to the growth of its tech industry and the use of artificial intelligence among other European cities.
