The United Nations, an institution established as a symbol of international cooperation and peacebuilding in the post-World War II era, is now facing a circle of serious challenges. The American publication Wall Street Journal has reported on the inefficiency of this organization in the face of global crises and ongoing wars. This situation is particularly due to the concentration of power in the UN Security Council and the veto power of its five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom.

The Impact of Crises on the Efficiency of the United Nations

Global crises such as the wars in Ukraine, Yemen, and Syria have clearly revealed the inefficiency of the United Nations. In this context, the veto power of these five permanent members of the Security Council is seen as a major limiting factor in the organization's ability to make effective and swift decisions in times of crisis. For example, while wars continue in various parts of the world, the Security Council often faces deadlocks due to political disagreements and national interests of these countries.

Demand for Structural Reform

In these circumstances, the voices of those calling for structural reform of the United Nations, especially the Security Council, are increasingly being heard. Activists and international experts believe that to enhance the efficiency of this institution and better respond to crises, a fairer representation for countries in the Security Council must be established. These reforms could include increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the council to better represent different regions of the world.

At the same time, some analysts emphasize that if the United Nations cannot effectively respond to global challenges, it may lose its credibility, leading more countries to move towards creating alternative and independent institutions. These concerns are particularly pronounced in a context where the competition among major powers has intensified.

Ultimately, the crisis of inefficiency at the United Nations is not only related to the internal challenges of this institution but also depends on global developments and changes in international relations. In this regard, various countries must engage in closer cooperation to leverage the capacities of the United Nations as an international institution for resolving global issues.
