The organization "Democratic Socialists of America" (DSA) is increasingly gaining power at the heart of the world's capitalism. This leftist movement, known since Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign in 2016, is gradually attracting more attention and political influence in the United States. They believe that capitalism seeks to exploit the lower classes and should be replaced with democratic socialism.

History and Emergence of DSA

The "DSA" was formed in the 1970s through the merger of several smaller organizations and was long regarded as a fringe movement. However, Bernie Sanders' campaign in 2016 brought socialist ideas back into focus in the United States. Since then, this movement has successfully gained seats in the House of Representatives, especially in recent elections. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib are two members of this organization who were elected to the House in 2018.

Zahran Mamdani's victory in the New York City mayoral election in 2025 reaffirmed the electoral power of this organization and allowed them to influence Democratic Party decisions. DSA hopes to capitalize on this wave of victories in the midterm elections on November 3, 2023, and become a force that influences Democratic Party policies.

Challenges and Concerns

However, the rise of socialists in the Democratic Party has raised concerns among some moderates. They fear that socialist candidates may lead to electoral defeats. A report from the Brookings Institution indicates that some Democrats are worried about the introduction of socialist candidates, believing it could reduce their chances of controlling the House and Senate.

At the same time, others believe that DSA's influence is actually exaggerated and that while the movement has achieved successes, it will still remain on the margins. The question arises whether socialist ideas are truly radical or if they can act as a positive force in U.S. politics.

Ashik Siddiq, co-chair of DSA, states: "Many Americans believe that capitalism is not working well, and this indicates a need for fundamental changes." He particularly emphasizes the importance of fundamental reforms and states that democratic socialism could be a response to existing crises.

Ultimately, socialist ideas in the United States are a historical topic. Eugene V. Debs, a socialist candidate, ran for the presidency in the early 20th century and received nearly a million votes. However, with the rise of Soviet power and the onset of the Cold War, opposition to socialism increased sharply. Now, with economic and social changes, is it time for democratic socialism to be presented as a serious option in U.S. politics?
