In response to the experience of the Ukraine war, the German Army is forming a special drone battalion for the first time; a unit that will start its activities with about 300 soldiers and is expected to eventually reach a total of 600 personnel.
Announcement of the drone battalion formation by the Minister of Defense
Boris Pistorius, the German Minister of Defense, announced this program on Thursday, October 1 (9 Mehr), during a visit to the Bergen military training area in Lower Saxony. According to the German Army's plan, the formation of this battalion will begin throughout 2027. The Ukraine war has played a decisive role in the German Army's decision to create this unit. In this war, a large portion of destructive strikes have been carried out using drones, and the German Army now wants to consider this experience in its force structure.

New equipment and capabilities of the unit
Pistorius emphasized the importance of unmanned systems in ground warfare, stating: "Anyone who wants to have an advantage in ground combat must master warfare with unmanned systems." The new battalion will not be limited to flying drones. According to the German Minister of Defense, ground-based unmanned systems will also be part of the equipment and capabilities of this unit.
Pistorius stated that the systems provided to this battalion will cover a wide range of operational ranges; from very close distances to a range of 500 kilometers. Alongside this equipment, the German Army's drone battalion is also expected to have an independent company for electromagnetic warfare.
Christian Freuding, the inspector of the German Army Ground Forces, has provided more details about the structure of the new unit. According to him, the drone battalion will initially operate with about 300 male and female soldiers and will gradually expand. The ultimate goal of the German Army is to increase the number of personnel in this battalion to 600.
Despite the announcement of the formation timeline and the number of personnel for this unit, no decision has yet been made regarding the location of the battalion. The establishment of an independent drone battalion also does not mean that the use of unmanned systems will be limited to this unit. The German Army simultaneously intends to integrate these systems into existing ground force units, including infantry, reconnaissance, and armored units.
Another equipment planned for the new battalion is loitering munitions; systems that are also referred to as "kamikaze drones." These new drones are currently in the testing phase within the German Army. According to the announced plan, these systems are expected to be made available to the Army forces next year, and the new drone battalion will also be equipped with them.
Alongside the development of capabilities to use drones, the German Army also has plans to enhance its counter-drone capabilities; including equipping Brigade 45 with counter-drone capabilities, a brigade intended for deployment in Lithuania. According to Freuding, the definitive goal is to ensure that this brigade is equipped with counter-drone capabilities before its transfer to Lithuania.
