Tehran Municipality has launched a new plan to support families and childbirth, specifically for mothers with newborns. This plan includes special support packages for mothers whose children are born from 2026 onwards. According to the Mayor of Tehran, this support includes monthly payments of 3.5 to 4 million tomans for each newborn.
Details of the Support Plan for Mothers and Infants
These support packages are designed to cover part of the costs needed by families in the early years of a child's life. The packages include 2.5 million tomans for purchases from fruit and vegetable markets and Shahrvand stores, as well as 1 million tomans for cultural and health-oriented services. The municipality aims to help mothers reduce their daily expenses by providing shopping cards for these centers.
Goals and Outcomes of the Plan
The support plan for mothers and infants is implemented with four main goals: strengthening the psychological security of families, focusing on maternal health, supporting childbirth, and creating cultural facilities. Alireza Zakani, the Mayor of Tehran, has pointed out the low birth rate in Tehran, stating that approximately 63,000 births were registered in Tehran last year, while institutions should strive to increase the birth rate to higher figures according to set goals.
According to the seventh program, the birth rate in Tehran should reach 143,000 births per year. This requires cultural, promotional, and advocacy efforts, and all municipal entities, especially cultural centers, must become active in promoting childbirth and supporting families.
Cultural and Recreational Services for Mothers and Infants
In addition to financial support, Tehran Municipality has designed various cultural and recreational services for mothers in Tehran. These services include visits to tourist attractions such as Milad Tower and house-museums, discounts of 50 to 70 percent at sports centers, and free access to certain services. Additionally, an annual shopping credit from the Book Garden has been allocated for mothers.
Maryam Ardabili, head of the Women's and Family Center of Tehran Municipality, has emphasized that these supportive services will be activated from the moment of the child's birth to make the city more family-oriented and to reduce the difficulties of childbirth, allowing mothers to benefit from a range of municipal facilities.
