France is currently witnessing widespread protests from students that started in the suburbs of Paris and have turned into a nationwide movement. These protests initially arose due to a shortage of teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and the poor condition of school buildings, but gradually students and teachers joined in.
Expansion of Protests Nationwide
The protests have spread to over 1,200 high schools across France, with the number of detainees exceeding 5,000. On October 1, more than 1,020 high schools were affected by these protests, and 222 schools were closed. Cities such as Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Rennes, Nantes, and Strasbourg also witnessed gatherings and clashes.

Students at the Saint-Exupéry high school in Créteil, one of the initial points of these protests, blocked school entrances and held gatherings, demanding an increase in teaching staff and improvements in facilities. Initially, these protests were peaceful, but gradually escalated into violence, leading to street clashes in some areas.
Reasons and Demands of the Protesters
The shortage of teachers is one of the main reasons for the onset of these protests. At the "Le Corbusier" high school in northern Paris, some classes have been canceled due to the lack of teachers, and students have expressed dissatisfaction with this situation. They believe that this problem directly impacts their readiness for exams and university admission.
In addition to the shortage of teachers, the physical conditions of schools and high class density have also fueled the protests. Students complain about classes with more than 30 students, a lack of seating, poor sanitary facilities, and heating issues. The gap between schools in disadvantaged areas and wealthier ones has also been raised as another social factor in these protests.
On October 1, student gatherings turned into street clashes, with trash bins and street barriers set on fire. On this day, about 1,950 people were detained in connection with the protests, and according to news sources, some police and fire service personnel were also injured in these clashes.
While the government is trying to distinguish between peaceful protests and violence, the discussion about police conduct towards protesters has also become a hot social topic. Some leftist political activists have participated in these protests and criticized the government's security responses.
However, hopes for improving educational conditions and achieving the rights of the protesters are still alive, and it is expected that these movements will lead to tangible changes in the near future.
