Starlink, the internet system owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, plays a vital role in the Ukraine war. This satellite network provides high-speed internet, helping Ukrainian forces establish effective communications on the battlefield and utilize technologies such as drones for surveillance and reconnaissance.
The Role of Starlink in Modern Warfare
With over 10,000 active satellites, Starlink is considered the largest satellite network in the world. This network is particularly useful in areas with limited internet access, such as battlefields. Ukrainian soldiers can easily connect to the internet using simple equipment that does not require special installation, allowing them to carry out their operations effectively.

However, on Tuesday evening, Starlink suddenly imposed a restriction that limited drones to maintaining their internet connection only up to a certain speed. This action, according to a senior Ukrainian official, disrupted some battlefield operations and reduced Kyiv's ability to counter Russian attacks.
New Restrictions and Their Consequences
According to the new restrictions, drones moving at speeds over 160 kilometers per hour would lose their connection and effectively become unusable. This has raised serious concerns among Ukrainian officials and could have significant implications for the course of the war. Kurt Volker, former U.S. ambassador to NATO, described this restriction as a "ruthless decision" and stated that cutting this capability could endanger more lives.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, also reacted to this limitation, expressing hope that it was just a mistake. However, he indicated in another interview that it was a deliberate decision. In response to the criticism, Elon Musk stated that the management of Starshield, the military version of Starlink, is under the control of the U.S. government, and any restrictions in this regard are determined by the Pentagon.
Starlink, as a communication tool in the Ukraine war, enables Ukrainian forces to transmit information in real-time and use it for identification and targeting. According to experts, this technology has become the "backbone of military communications in Ukraine," and without it, Kyiv's military operations would be severely impacted.
Ultimately, while Starlink can provide internet access almost anywhere in the world, the new restrictions could pose a serious threat to Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Any disruption or limitation in communications could have unpredictable consequences for Ukraine's national security.
