Sara Yousofi, an entrepreneur and accessibility advocate, examines how the blind use modern technologies and highlights the role of specific software in this regard. Today (Thursday, October 15), on the occasion of World White Cane Day, she emphasized the importance of access to digital tools for blind individuals in an interview.

Technology in Service of the Blind

Yousofi states that the technology tools used by the blind are not specifically different; they also use regular laptops and mobile phones. However, what distinguishes these tools for blind individuals are the software known as "screen readers" that allow them to hear and utilize the text displayed on their phone and laptop screens.

Accessibility and Existing Challenges

Yousofi refers to the concept of "accessibility" and explains that it means how a business can adapt its products and services for use by people with disabilities. She emphasizes that adhering to accessibility standards is beneficial not only for the blind but for various segments of society and can improve individuals' efficiency.

This disability rights advocate also criticizes the government's and responsible organizations' lack of attention to providing accessible services and adaptations for the blind. She states that although the private sector has made efforts in this area, the lack of information from the government has left blind individuals unaware of available facilities.

Yousofi further points out the compounded problems faced by the blind during internet outages, saying: "Our lives are heavily dependent on technology, and frequent internet outages can disrupt our lives. Using ride-hailing services when GPS malfunctions creates serious challenges for us." She emphasizes that the problems faced by the blind were previously limited to the lack of accessibility in spaces, but now, even solutions are closed off to them despite the existence of technology.
