Russian drone strikes on Kyiv on the morning of October 2 (October 10) caused severe disruptions in traffic in parts of the Ukrainian capital, prompting city officials to block several bridges over the Dnipro River.
Damage to the Southern Bridge and Traffic Issues
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, announced that a drone hit the "Southern Bridge"; a bridge recognized as one of the most important communication routes between the two sides of the Ukrainian capital. Following these attacks, two other bridges were also completely and partially closed, although no reports of drone strikes on these two bridges have been published.

The Southern Bridge does not only serve as a route for vehicles; metro lines also cross it, and there are three vehicle lanes on it. This bridge connects the two banks of the Dnipro River and is therefore considered one of the main traffic axes in Kyiv. Disruption on such a route immediately showed its effects on the streets of the capital.
Widespread Impact on Residents' Daily Lives
The closure of the bridges in the morning hours led to long lines of vehicles in Kyiv, forcing residents to choose alternative routes to reach their destinations. The Southern Bridge and the Paton Bridge, two main routes used by residents of southern Kyiv, were among the bridges that experienced traffic restrictions.
In videos shared on social media, images of people crossing a bridge on foot while vehicle and tram traffic had come to a halt can be seen. These restrictions particularly affected the lives of residents on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. According to witnesses, officials allowed traffic over the bridges again around noon.
The drone strikes were not limited to transportation infrastructure. According to the mayor of Kyiv, a Russian drone hit a residential building in the eastern part of the city, killing one person in this attack. While city officials worked throughout the morning to reopen communication routes over the Dnipro River, these attacks once again highlighted the importance of these routes for the daily commutes of Kyiv residents.
