RP patients and their companions celebrated White Cane Day with a joint run. In this event, 10 blind and visually impaired individuals gathered alongside 10 sighted companions at the Enghelab Sports Complex in Tehran to show that sports can be an opportunity to recognize abilities and reduce social distances.
Sports; An Opportunity for Interaction and Awareness
This program was organized by the RP Eye Patients Support Institute and the Peykar Sports Group. The goal of this event was not only to encourage physical activity but also to demonstrate that with the right conditions, individuals with visual impairments can play an effective role in sports and social activities.
One of the main parts of this event was the joint run of 20 participants in two groups of 10. This run provided an opportunity for blind and visually impaired individuals to engage in sports activities alongside their companions and become more familiar with the challenges and proper ways of interacting with each other.
Shared Experiences and Reducing Distances
Another part of the program was dedicated to group games in which participants had to find a specific object using the voice of their companion and their verbal guidance. These games provided a practical experience of the importance of effective communication, mutual trust, and the proper way to guide individuals with visual impairments.
Tahmineh Yeganeh, CEO of the RP Eye Patients Support Institute, emphasized that supporting blind and visually impaired individuals is not limited to providing limited facilities, but society also needs to have a greater understanding of their abilities, needs, and rights. She also stressed the importance of holding such programs and said that shared sports experiences and direct interaction can help reduce distances and create a more inclusive community.
Shahmoradi also emphasized the necessity of creating equal opportunities for individuals with visual impairments to participate in social and sports activities and said, "Joint collaborations in the field of awareness must be increased."
