Mohammad Reza Sabaghian, the representative of the people of Mehriz and Bafq in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, expressed concern about the imprisonment of a representative during today's (Sunday, October 12) virtual public session and emphasized the need for transparency regarding the immunity of representatives. He referred to Articles 84 and 86 of the Constitution in his warning and raised important questions.
Concern About the Immunity of Representatives
Sabaghian said: "Currently, one representative is in prison, and the public is asking whether representatives have immunity or not?" He presented this issue as a fundamental challenge to the status of Parliament and representation and called for clarification of the problem and the reasons for this situation.

Criticizing the trend that is forming in Parliament, he stated: "Parliament should not become a yes-man assembly. Today, one person is a representative and may face legal action and even imprisonment due to expressing opinions and fulfilling representative duties." Sabaghian emphasized the importance of freedom of speech for representatives and the necessity of having a free space to express the rights of the people.
The Need for Transparency and Preserving the Status of Parliament
He continued: "If we remain silent today, what question will be asked of us? If a representative of the people cannot freely speak about the issues of the country and the rights of the people, how will the status of Parliament be preserved?" Sabaghian also compared the situation of representatives with members of the government and asked: "If someone in the government is imprisoned, does anyone not allow them to speak about it the next day?"
Referring to the 50-year history of Parliament and past incidents, he emphasized that the imprisonment of a representative during their term is an unprecedented issue. Sabaghian said: "This situation diminishes the status of Parliament. This is about the rights of the people, and a representative must be able to shout the rights of the people without fear."
In conclusion, Mohammad Reza Sabaghian emphasized the need for transparency in this matter, stating: "I feel that at least if this issue is not clarified, it will have its effects in the future." He urged the Deputy Speaker of Parliament to pay special attention to the status of Parliament and stressed the necessity of supporting representatives in fulfilling their duties.
