Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, met with Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting followed a phone conversation between the two sides in July, and according to Kuleba, its main focus was on reciprocal actions to prevent escalation of tensions between the two countries.

Dmytro Kuleba emphasized the importance of direct dialogue in diplomacy during this meeting, stating, "The essence of diplomacy is direct dialogue, even in difficult conditions." He also noted that both sides agreed to keep existing communication channels open to prevent new tensions from arising.

Emphasis on Peace and Stability
Furthermore, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister discussed the situation in the Middle East and Europe and ongoing efforts to establish peace. He stated, "I emphasized Ukraine's position on supporting the establishment of peace and stability in both regions as soon as possible." These emphases come at a time when relations between Kyiv and Tehran have soured in recent years due to various tensions and disagreements.
The relationship between Iran and Ukraine has been further strained due to Ukraine's recent attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. This attack prompted Iran to summon the Ukrainian chargé d'affaires and describe Ukraine's actions as "hostile and criminal." This situation highlights the importance of dialogue between the two countries to reduce tensions and seek diplomatic solutions.
This meeting occurs while both countries face unique challenges on the international stage. Ukraine is seeking international support to address its security issues, while Iran is also striving to strengthen its diplomatic relations internationally. These discussions could pave the way for improving relations and reducing tensions.
