Johnny Depp spoke about the possibility of reprising his role as Jack Sparrow during an interview on the show "Entertainment Tonight" while promoting his new film "Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol." Despite expressing interest in the role, he refrained from confirming his return and outlined conditions for collaborating with Hollywood again.

Johnny Depp's Conditions for Return

Depp stated: "The only involvement I really want to have is to help create a better ending for them, if everything is in the right place for how to conclude the Pirates franchise." He also mentioned Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the series, saying: "I will work with Jerry Bruckheimer on anything. It doesn't matter what it is; if Jerry is involved, I trust him. We have a deep friendship."

History of Pirates of the Caribbean

Johnny Depp played the lead role in five films of the franchise released between 2003 and 2017. These films collectively grossed over $650 million at the global box office, with two installments, "Dead Man's Chest" (2006) and "On Stranger Tides" (2011), surpassing the $1 billion mark. The total global box office for the films featuring Depp reached approximately $4.5 billion.

The last installment of the series, titled "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," was released in 2017 and became the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise with a worldwide gross of $795.9 million. After this film, allegations and controversies surrounding Depp's life with Amber Heard led to a shift in his career direction in Hollywood, leaning more towards lower-budget projects.

The path to creating the sixth installment of the series has been very lengthy. Disney announced in 2020 that two new films were in the early stages of development: a reboot centered around Margot Robbie and the sixth installment of the main series. Jerry Bruckheimer announced in the summer of 2024 that Jeff Nathanson, the screenwriter for the fifth film, would be writing the script for "Pirates of the Caribbean 6."

Bruckheimer had also previously stated that if the decision were up to him, he would keep Depp in the new film and considered "Jack Sparrow" a character that Depp created with his unique interpretation and performance. Meanwhile, Depp's future involvement in the series remains uncertain following his legal battles with Amber Heard.
