JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, is trying to distance himself from the Republican defeat in the midterm elections through indirect yet clear criticisms of Donald Trump's performance, positioning himself for the future leadership of the Republican Party and the presidential elections of 2028.

A Critique of the MAGA Political Coalition

On Wednesday, Vance delivered an unprecedented message on social media, examining the ruins of the MAGA political coalition and sharing his views; a message that effectively marked the early start of the 2028 presidential campaign. In this context, Vance is seeking to play a leadership role and this is somewhat his first attempt to present himself as a key figure among Republican leaders who want to chart a new course for the party.

The Conflict Between Trump's Dream and Vance's Reality

While Trump was enjoying the progress of the banquet hall project at the White House, Vance was grappling with a more challenging mission: how to pull the Republican Party out of the disaster of defeat in the House and Senate elections. He clearly stated in his message: "The reason for our defeat is war." He also distanced himself from two defining issues of Trump's presidency, namely the war with Iran and the extensive operation to deport undocumented immigrants.

Following these criticisms, Vance is looking to create a new electoral coalition that can both save the future of the Republican Party and keep his own presidential dream alive. He emphasized the need for change in the enforcement of immigration laws, stating that more attention should be paid to businesses that hire illegal labor.

In the meantime, Vance also supported proposals for a diplomatic end to the war with Iran, and this stance seems to indicate a potential distancing from Trump. He noted that to win back dissatisfied Trump and Vance voters to the Republicans, four key issues need to be addressed: ending the war, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, America First, and changing the relationship between America and Israel.
