The newspaper 'Novaya Gazeta', one of the most prominent independent news media still operating in Russia, has announced that it will soon be shut down due to government pressure.
The end of an era
Sergei Sokolov, the editor-in-chief of this newspaper, said in a statement published on YouTube with sorrowful words that 'Novaya Gazeta will no longer exist.' This announcement clearly reflects the critical conditions of this media outlet, which has been recognized for years as an independent and critical voice against the policies of the Russian government.
This newspaper has received an eviction notice for its office, and the system that allowed it to receive financial support from its readers has ceased to function. As a result, 'Novaya Gazeta' has no way to cover its publication costs.
A history full of danger
Since the establishment of this newspaper in 1993, several of its journalists have been murdered after publishing critical articles about government officials. Dmitry Muratov, the former editor-in-chief of this newspaper, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for his efforts to defend freedom of expression in Russia. However, this success could not prevent the increasing pressures from Russian authorities on him and his colleagues.
Anna Politkovskaya, one of these journalists, was shot dead 20 years ago in the stairwell of her apartment building. She was one of the few Russian journalists reporting on human rights violations in Chechnya, and many believe her murder was orchestrated.
The closure of 'Novaya Gazeta' is another sign of the tightening political and social space in Russia and the increasing inclination of its authorities towards authoritarianism. Following the onset of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this newspaper faced significant pressure, and its print edition was halted in Russia.
Despite all these challenges, 'Novaya Gazeta' had managed to continue its operations, but now it seems that these efforts have come to an end. This media outlet, once recognized as an independent and critical voice against corruption and human rights violations, has now reached the end of its line.
