Gunnarsson, the Foreign Minister of Iceland, gave a strong response to the Prime Minister of the Israeli regime, Benjamin Netanyahu, during his speech at the UN General Assembly. This reaction came in response to Netanyahu's remarks, in which he referred to representatives of other countries as "moral cowards." During this event, Gunnarsson expressed his strong criticisms regarding the violation of international laws and the failure of global leaders to adhere to ethical principles.
Criticism of Cowardly Leaders
The Foreign Minister of Iceland stated in his speech: "We have heard the term moral cowards from this podium. In my opinion, the moral cowards are those world leaders who refuse to sit at the negotiating table for a just and lasting peace. Those who deny access to humanitarian aid for those in need are the moral cowards, as are those leaders who repeatedly violate international laws and show no respect for them."
Violation of International Laws and the Situation in Gaza
Gunnarsson also referred to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating: "The suffering of Palestinian civilians must not become 'background noise.' Children are still being killed, and families are still losing their homes." He pointed to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the lack of fundamental solutions to its issues, emphasizing that the situation in Gaza should not be allowed to repeat itself without addressing its root causes.
This Icelandic minister also criticized the continued illegal settlements in the West Bank and the resulting violence, stating Iceland's goal is to implement the two-state solution. Expressing regret over the current situation, he emphasized the need to respect international laws, saying: "Court decisions must be respected unless they challenge our actions or those of our friends. Sovereignty is sacred unless the territory of another is in the way of our ambitions."
Gunnarsson's words were not only the voice of Iceland's protest but also the voice of many countries and people around the world against inhumane behaviors and human rights violations in war-affected and conflict areas. Using this global platform, he sought to draw attention to humanitarian needs and human rights, emphasizing the necessity of fundamentally addressing issues.
