The Federal Reserve of the United States, in a key decision, raised the interest rate by 0.25 percentage points, bringing it to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent. This action strengthened the dollar and reduced gold prices, with the spot gold price dropping by 1.2 percent to around $4,240 per ounce. An increase in interest rates is generally considered negative news for the gold market, as gold does not pay periodic interest, and with rising yields on interest-bearing assets, the opportunity cost of holding it increases.

Consequences of Interest Rate Hike on the Gold Market

With the increase in interest rates, selling pressure on gold also intensified. As a result, the rise in Treasury yields and the strengthening dollar led to a decrease in gold prices. However, these effects were adjusted much sooner than expected. Today, the spot gold price rose by more than one percent to $4,310.49. This price rebound was partly due to the market having already priced in the interest rate hike and the likelihood of a more contractionary policy.

Future Outlook for Gold Prices

According to the Federal Reserve's new forecasts, 16 out of 18 policymakers expect at least one more 0.25 percentage point increase by the end of this year. This could continue to exert pressure on gold prices. Additionally, a decrease in oil prices could provide support for gold in the medium term, but currently, the pressures from rising interest rates may dominate the gold market trend.

Overall, these developments indicate uncertainty in the gold market and the profound impacts of the Federal Reserve's monetary policies on this market. Investors should closely monitor economic and financial changes and be prepared to adapt to new conditions.
