In recent years, artificial intelligence has become one of the largest fields of technological competition, but not all ideas in this domain have turned into lasting products. From startup projects to plans from major companies like OpenAI, Apple, and Microsoft, there are numerous examples that have been shut down or redirected for various reasons.
OpenAI Projects in the Spotlight
In July, OpenAI attempted to turn ChatGPT into a "super app" by combining the Chat, Codex, and Work sections into a new experience. The new design faced severe criticism from users due to its clutter and complexity, and the company shortly returned to the familiar previous interface.

The AI browser Atlas was also launched as an independent product, but this project lasted less than a year and was halted on August 9. Its functional capabilities were transferred to ChatGPT. Additionally, the video platform Sora faced issues such as high operational costs and difficulty retaining users, leading to its shutdown in March 2026.
Challenges for Apple and Microsoft
When introducing Apple Intelligence in 2024, Apple promised a much more powerful version of Siri that could understand conversational context and perform various tasks across applications. The release of this feature was repeatedly delayed due to engineering problems and bugs, and ultimately, the AI version of Siri entered the beta of iOS 27 in the summer of 2026.
Microsoft introduced Recall as a type of "visual memory" for Windows computers that took screenshots of user activities. However, security and privacy concerns delayed its release by nearly a year, and even after redesign, security research revived concerns about access to recorded data.
Other AI Project Issues
Notion Mail, a tool for organizing and automating email inboxes with the help of AI, was launched in April 2025. However, Notion found that users were turning to independent AI agents to manage their emails, and this service is set to shut down on September 22.
Relay, a tool for automating workflows with the help of AI agents, was shut down after five years as companies like OpenAI and Google added similar capabilities directly to their products. AI Pin, which was supposed to be a wearable alternative to smartphones, was shut down in February 2025 due to poor performance and warnings about the potential for the charging case to catch fire.
The DALL-E service, which was once the primary destination for users to generate images with AI, gradually transferred image generation to ChatGPT, reducing its role as an independent service. Rabbit R1, introduced as an AI assistant, faced challenges due to unstable performance and limited features.
Finally, Figgs AI, which allowed users to create and interact with customizable AI characters, was shut down due to high costs of providing free services. Huxe, an AI audio application that converted text into podcast-like content, was also shut down in May 2026 due to the expansion of similar capabilities on larger platforms.
Overall, these projects reflect serious challenges in the field of artificial intelligence and impact the future of this technology. Despite remarkable advancements, the world of AI continues to face obstacles and issues, some of which are directly related to management and decision-making in this domain.
