Meta, the owner of Facebook, has been condemned to pay a $25 billion fine due to a widespread scandal that occurred in 2018 for the misuse of its users' data. This ruling was issued by Judge Francis Mathew in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Meta has announced that it will appeal this ruling.

Intentional Violations and Heavy Fines

Judge Mathew explained the reason for the high fine by pointing to the "abnormally high number of intentional violations" by Meta and emphasized that this amount will accrue an annual interest of 15% until fully paid. This fine follows a jury's ruling in late September that found Meta guilty in this case and stated that the company had deceived users in protecting their data.

User Data and Elections

The Cambridge Analytica scandal is specifically linked to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, when the company analyzed the data of over 87 million Facebook users without their consent. This data was widely used by political consultants to influence election outcomes and also for the Brexit referendum. Although Cambridge Analytica no longer exists, the effects of this scandal continue to linger in the political and social landscape in the U.S. and the U.K.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also accused Facebook of violating data protection regulations and facilitating access to user data for Cambridge Analytica following the revelation of this scandal. As a result of this complaint, Meta was forced to pay a fine of $5 billion in 2019.

Serious Consequences for Meta and the Digital Space

This new fine could have serious consequences for Meta and other technology companies. With increasing concerns about privacy and data security, it is expected that other entities and organizations will seek greater oversight of large tech companies. Additionally, this issue could lead to the establishment of stricter laws in the field of user data protection.

Ultimately, this scandal highlights the serious challenges that technology companies face and underscores the need for transparency and accountability regarding user data. This ruling not only impacts Meta but could also serve as a model for other companies to pay more attention to the protection of user information.
