The Lufthansa airline flight that was traveling from Frankfurt to Lisbon on Saturday had to change its course and make an emergency landing in Lyon, France, due to a power bank fire from one of the passengers. This incident highlights the importance of paying attention to safety precautions during flights and the proper use of electronic devices.
Details of the Incident
The Airbus A321-200 aircraft, carrying 198 passengers and 6 crew members, encountered a problem during the flight. The fire broke out when the battery of the passenger's portable charger ignited and smoke began to rise from it. This situation could have quickly escalated into a serious crisis, but the flight crew acted swiftly.

Crew Response and Emergency Landing
The flight crew immediately placed the burning power bank into a special lithium battery safety bag to prevent the spread of fire and smoke in the cabin. The pilot declared an emergency to prioritize landing, and the aircraft safely landed on the runway of Lyon airport at night.
Fortunately, none of the passengers or crew were harmed in this incident, and they were all accommodated in a hotel in Lyon. The passengers continued their journey to Lisbon on another flight on Sunday, and this bitter experience served as an important reminder regarding flight safety.
Safety Measures for the Future
This incident prompted Lufthansa to consider changes to its policies. It is worth noting that the airline has banned the use or charging of power banks on board since January 2026, but passengers can still carry a maximum of two power banks, provided they keep them in the seat pocket or with themselves and not in the overhead bin.
In light of this incident, passengers must pay more attention to safety precautions and avoid placing electronic devices in inappropriate compartments. This bitter experience is a reminder that safety in air travel should be a priority.
