China has firmly supported Iran for the third time and announced its opposition to the new sanctions imposed by the United States. This move comes in the wake of the signing of the Graham law by Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, which imposes tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil products.

China's opposition to unilateral sanctions

The Ministry of Commerce of China has issued a statement declaring that Beijing has always opposed unilateral sanctions and what is referred to as "secondary sanctions." This statement was particularly released in response to the new sanctions against Iran and Russia. On May 15, 2023, China issued a legal order to block U.S. sanctions against five Chinese refining companies accused of purchasing Iranian oil, thereby prohibiting the enforcement of U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Consequences of sanctions on international relations

The new U.S. sanctions could have widespread consequences for major oil-importing countries, including China and India. Countries like Turkey, recognized as U.S. allies, may also face new and harsher tariffs. Some opponents of this plan believe that this action could pave the way for the imposition of tariffs against the entire European Union, especially considering that several member countries continue to purchase Russian energy products.

The Chinese Foreign Minister has also recently stated that Beijing is determined to firmly defend the legitimate rights and interests of Iran. These statements reflect China's resolve to maintain strong relations with Iran and counter U.S. sanctions. Additionally, China and Russia recently vetoed a proposed U.S. resolution regarding anti-Iranian sanctions, indicating the close cooperation between these two countries in the face of international pressures.

The Ministry of Commerce of China has also stated that Beijing will closely monitor Washington's subsequent actions and reserves the right to take "all necessary measures" to protect the sovereignty, developmental interests, and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies. These positions reflect China's efforts to preserve and expand its economic interests in the face of global challenges.

In light of recent developments, it seems that China and Iran's relations will strengthen in the near future, with China remaining a strong supporter against the challenges posed by sanctions and international pressures.
