Behnam Bakhshi, spokesperson for the Tehran Water and Wastewater Company, announced regarding the rainfall situation and water reserves in Tehran that since the beginning of the water year, the amount of rainfall in Tehran has reached approximately 3.5 millimeters. Meanwhile, Tehran needs 280 millimeters of rainfall in a water year to overcome the drought conditions.

Drought and Its Effects on Tehran's Water Resources

Bakhshi noted that Tehran has experienced drought conditions for more than the recorded statistics over the past six years, and last year the amount of rainfall reached 176 millimeters. These drought conditions have had negative impacts on the groundwater and aquifers of Tehran. He also emphasized that to make a definitive statement regarding the improvement of water conditions in Tehran, it is necessary to pass through the autumn and winter seasons and assess the amount of rainfall.

Growth of Dam Reserves and the Need for Water Consumption Management

The spokesperson for the Tehran Water and Wastewater Company referred to the increase of 148 million cubic meters in the reserves of Tehran's five dams and announced that the reserves at the beginning of Mehr 1405 have reached 391 million cubic meters. However, he emphasized that ideally, there should be about 600 million cubic meters of water reserves, and currently, there is a deficit of 200 million cubic meters.

Bakhshi pointed to the role of the public in managing water consumption and said: "The people of Tehran managed to save 74 billion liters, equivalent to one Latyan dam, through consumption management this summer and spring." He urged citizens to help improve conditions by consuming water wisely and fairly, so that the anticipated rainfall can have a significant impact.

He also spoke about the progress made in water consumption management in Tehran, stating: "The people of Tehran have reduced per capita consumption from 250 liters to less than 180 liters over the past two and a half years, which is commendable." Bakhshi hopes that the remaining 50 percent of subscribers who are in the high consumption range will join the consumption pattern.

Bakhshi further referred to the El Niño phenomenon and the potential impact it may have on Tehran's weather conditions, stating: "With the announcement from the Meteorological Organization, a state of readiness has been declared for the El Niño phenomenon in Tehran, and necessary measures to counter potential floods are being implemented."

He also emphasized the necessity of paying attention to water consumption during the cold seasons and urged people to cooperate in optimal water consumption by taking simple actions such as closing the water inlet valves of evaporative coolers and preventing water wastage.
