Arash Yoshida, the Iranian-descended freestyle wrestler of the Japanese national team, is one of the prominent young faces in the world of wrestling in the 97 kg weight category, who has made his mark among the contenders in this weight class with his outstanding performances in Asian and world competitions. Despite competing under the Japanese flag, he has always spoken of and taken pride in his Iranian roots.

Beginning of Life and Entry into Wrestling

Arash Yoshida was born on January 11, 2004, in Japan. Javad Esfanjani, Arash's father, is an old wrestler from Iran who migrated to Japan about three decades ago. There, he married a Japanese woman and had five sons and one daughter. Esfanjani established a wrestling academy in Chiba city, creating a special environment for nurturing sports talents; an academy where the Iranian flag is raised, symbolizing his deep connection to his homeland.

All of Javad Esfanjani's sons are active in wrestling. The most prominent among them is Arash Yoshida, who became the Asian champion in the 92 kg weight category and even defeated Arshak Mohabi, Iran's representative in the Asian competitions, 10-0 to claim the championship title and be recognized as a rising star in wrestling. This family has become a hub for nurturing champions. Arash, along with his brothers Keyvan and Arya, grew up under their father's guidance in this academy, and all three made it to the Japanese national wrestling team.

Shining in Asia and the World

One of Yoshida's first significant international successes came at the 2023 Asian Championships, where he won a gold medal in the 92 kg weight category. This achievement solidified his position as one of the promising talents in Japanese wrestling. Yoshida later moved up to the 97 kg weight category and at the 2025 World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, he achieved one of the most important honors of his sports career by winning a bronze medal. This medal was won at a time when Japanese freestyle wrestling had faced difficulties in winning world medals in the heavier weight classes for years.

He also won a gold medal at the 2025 Asian Championships and defended his championship title in 2026 by defeating Amir Ali Azarpeira, Iran's representative, in the final of the 97 kg weight category. In these competitions, Yoshida also defeated Ahmad Tajaldinov, the Olympic champion of Paris, showcasing his abilities against the world's top contenders.

Arash Yoshida is now considered one of the prominent figures in the 97 kg weight category, and his main goal is to continue his international successes and make a strong presence on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
