Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, has officially resigned from his position. This decision comes after the announcement of early parliamentary elections in Serbia on October 25. Vučić will participate in these elections as the main candidate of the Progressive Party and intends to return to the position of Prime Minister if he wins.

History and Current Situation

Vučić, who served as Prime Minister of Serbia from 2014 to 2017, has been active as the President of the country since then. He is recognized as a key figure in the political scene of Serbia and seems to continue to play a significant role in guiding political currents. Vučić's presidential term is set to end under normal circumstances next year, and thereafter, due to legal restrictions, he will not be able to run for this position.

Temporary Position and Upcoming Elections

Following Vučić's resignation, Ana Brnabić, the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, will temporarily assume the presidency. Brnabić is also a member of the Progressive Party and has served as Prime Minister during Vučić's presidency. A specific date for the new presidential elections has not yet been determined, but according to the constitutional laws of Serbia, these elections must be held within three months following Vučić's resignation.

The upcoming parliamentary elections will specifically be monitored by the student movement, which is considered Vučić's main rival. This movement emerged due to a disaster that occurred on November 1, 2024, at the Novi Sad railway station, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. Members of this movement cite government corruption and negligence of officials as the reasons for this disaster, and consequently, they are seeking fundamental changes in the country's political structure.

Challenges Facing Vučić and the Progressive Party

Vučić and his Progressive Party have effectively shaped Serbia's policies for over a decade. However, critics have raised serious concerns about him and his party, accusing them of restricting democratic institutions and media freedom. These issues will undoubtedly influence the outcome of the upcoming elections and may lead to significant changes in Serbia's political landscape.

In this tense environment, the political future of Vučić and the Progressive Party is heavily dependent on the results of the early elections and the community's reaction to the existing challenges. Given the current situation, Serbia is on the brink of a major transformation, and the political fate of this country will be significantly affected by upcoming events.
